Numeracy skills start with understanding whole numbers and performing arithmetic operations with whole numbers. For complete numeracy skills, the concepts and use of part numbers must be understood. This is a subject area where many students have some difficulty with the concepts. Without a strong understanding of numeracy skills, students will struggle with other parts of the math curriculum.
Part numbers can be expressed in different forms, as fractions, decimals or percents. Math Course 1, Fractions: Step by Step, addresses the concepts of part numbers and covers how to perform arithmetic operations with math fractions and how to solve math fractions problems. A complete list of Topics covered by this Course appears below.
The subject of Fractions is recognized as a complete ‘math strand’ within the math curriculum. Math Course 1 covers 30 learning outcomes which meet or exceed the standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics for fractions and also correlates to state standards. Fractions curriculum is spread between Grades 3 and 7 and its concentration by Grade varies by state.
The Course content is organized sequentially so earlier Topics will correlate to the earlier delivery of curriculum. The arithmetic work and problem solving with fractions tends to be mostly concentrated at Grades 5 and 6. Consequently, our Grade rating for the Fractions: Step by Step Course is: Target: 5 & 6, Remedial: 6 and up, Enrichment: 3,4 & 5. Students can progress to grade level and suspend further work or continue to move forward for enrichment.
